PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT

All too often, attempts to implement truly effective performance management processes (i.e., processes that seek to ensure the maximum quality and discretionary performance from each individual) degenerate into:

redesigns of appraisal forms reminiscent of the late 50’s

arguments over the size and labeling of the rating scale

debates about whether ratings should be against results, behaviour/demonstrated competency, or both

training in how to run formal appraisal interviews.

There is little if any evidence to show that any of these are effective and significant evidence to show that they can be damaging.

Black Rand Holdings does not promote any specific performance management methodology but does have a model for auditing the effectiveness of any specific process. This model can also be used to design a new process for any organization – sufficiently innovative that it adds value yet sufficiently contextual that it can be implemented with enough buy-in to sustain it.
